World Book Day 2017

The day began with an entertaining whole school assembly where the children were treated to readings of Little Rabbit Foo Foo, Boy by Roald Dahl and a dramatic re-enactment of the Lighthouse Keepers Picnic.

Across the school there were plenty of opportunities to read a range of books, beginning with paired reading across the year groups. There was also a special star visitor - Miss Seymour’s dog Winston. Winston visited each class and heard the children read individually. This really was a fantastic way for the children to share their love of reading and Winston certainly enjoyed it!


Each year group was brimming with different book activities including designing alternative book covers and creating classroom door displays based on a book. In Reception the children turned themselves into Cheshire cats from Alice in Wonderland and created a Cheshire cat door display. Year 1 children had an alien filled day with their chosen book, Aliens Love Underpants. They made shape alien characters, decorated underpants for their door and retold the story. Year 2 had an excellent time creating their ‘Peach Surprise’ display, where they created their own delicious picnics for Mr and Mrs Grinling using noun phrases and exclamations for description.

Across KS2 the children designed an alternative book cover, took part in a book scavenger hunt and entered the World Book Day design a book token competition.  Each class also had a terrific time creating their door displays including ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ (Year 3), ‘The Witches’ (Year 4) and ‘Way Home’ (Year 5).

Throughout the day each class was hard at work contributing to Elsea Park’s World Book Day story. After the Reception class had decided on the characters and the setting the story was passed along to each year group to add in their part. Winston was delighted to find out the story was based on him saving Rapunzel from a fire breathing dragon, all taking part in the woods next to Elsea Park!

The day ended with a celebration assembly where some children read out a passage from their favourite books, each class shared the activities they had taken part in and finally everyone had the opportunity to hear the whole school story they had created.
